Laundry tips

Washing

  • Use a non-bio or eco-friendly powder or liquid as it is kinder to skin and could prolong the life of your nappies.
  • Wash at 40 degrees to save energy.
  • Fold over any Velcro tabs to avoid snagging in the wash.
  • Don't use fabric conditioner, as it will make nappies less absorbent.

Staining

Some kind of staining is normal particularly with breast fed newborns. Stains can be pre-treated before washing but:

Please don't use bleach.

During the summer, dry the nappies outdoors as sunlight has a natural bleaching effect.

Soaking may help to remove stains (see below).

Soaking

Soaking is optional but can help to remove stains more easily. Before washing you can try soaking your nappies in a bucket containing one third water and any one of the following soaking options:

  • 5 drops of tea tree oil.
  • 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda.
  • 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.

Drying

Nappies can be dried outdoors on a line in good weather.

If you are drying indoors avoid putting nappies directly over a radiator, the fabric will stay softer if they are placed on an airer next to it instead.

Wraps shouldn't be placed over direct heat and will dry quickly on an airer.

Tumble drying

Please check the washing instructions on the nappies before tumble drying.

Line dried nappies can be put in the drier for a few minutes to fluff them up when they are nearly dry.

Nappies dried on an airer can be finished off in the drier.

  • Don't tumble dry wraps as it can shorten their life.

Please bear in mind that other methods of drying may be cheaper and will use less energy than your tumble drier.

Ironing

Nappies don't need ironing as it flattens the fibres and reduces absorbency.
